Wednesday: The Determination Promise

This is my screensaver for days that I need to do
the things I’m afraid to do and to ask for help to
do those things that I cannot do by myself

Each day this week I am writing about that day’s promise from The Self Empowerment Pledge. Wednesday’s Promise is Determination: I will do the things I’m afraid to do but which I know should be done. Sometimes this will mean asking for help to do that which I cannot do by myself.

Several years ago I gave a presentation for a large financial services organization. It was a return engagement. Following the program a man came up and reminded me that we’d met the year before and said that he had really taken The Self Empowerment Pledge to heart.

Then he said that if the world was fair, he’d be writing me a check for $10,000.

That naturally got my attention. I asked him why.

He simply said, “Wednesday’s Promise.” He told me that wasn’t just Wednesday’s Promise for him, it was seven days a week promise. He said that it was under the glass of his desk at the office, on his locker at the gym, on his bathroom mirror at home. He said he even had a laminated copy on the seat of his car so he’d see it every time he drove somewhere.

He told me that he’d been making calls he’d previously been afraid to make, and that he was asking for help to open doors he’d once thought were too big for him to open.

“My sales and my income have skyrocketed,” he said, “and if the world was fair, you’d get a commission.”

He went on to point out that I myself had said that the world is not always fair and so I would not be receiving a commission check (which I would not have accepted in any event).

We both had a good laugh, but that little vignette also contains a very big lesson.

Do you have a big goal? Whatever that goal is, you will have to do things you are afraid to do, you will have to ask questions that you are afraid to ask, and you will need to request help for doing the things that you cannot do by yourself.

That determination to act in the face of your fears, to ask despite the risk of rejection, and to request the help you need, is a catalyst for helping you become the person you must be if you are to achieve your most authentic goals and dreams.
