Crissy Womble adapted my recent article “Be the One” to this sticker for The Pickle Challenge for Charity at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio Texas, which launches next week.
Earlier this week I was at Tri-County Health Care in Wadena, Minnesota to watch our 24 newest Certified Values Coach Trainers teach the course on The Twelve Core Action Values. Having completed the 4-day course to become Values Coaches, they have now made the course their own by tailoring it with their stories and are ready to share what they have learned with their hospital, their families, and their community.
Next week I will be at Children’s Hospital New Orleans for a celebration to welcome the 61 people who have been selected to complete the course to become CHNOLA’s Certified Values Coach Trainers. Over the next several years, this group of Values Coaches will team-teach The Twelve Core Action Values course for all of their CHNOLA colleagues, as well as it being part of new employee orientation.
In medical school there is a saying: see one, do one, teach one. The best way to really learn something is to be responsible for teaching it to others.
At Values Coach, we have adapted that to say: see one, be one, teach one. The best way to change your own life in a positive way is to help others make positive changes in their lives, and the best way to do this is by teaching the things you are learning. This is the underlying insight that guides our work:
Culture does not change unless and until people change, but people will not fundamentally change unless guided by their own values.
Thus, the best investment an organization can make to build a more positive culture is to inspire its people to clarify and act upon their own personal values.
The Twelve Core Action Values is a 60-module course on values-based life and leadership skills. From Core Action Value #1 Authenticity through Core Action Value #12 Leadership, these are the values that we all aspire to live in our own lives, that we hope to teach our children, and that we want to see reflected in the organizations where we work.
